How to Get Your Own Gemini API Key from Scratch

To run your UPGUN AI assistant with your own Google Gemini key, we'll walk through creating the key, adding a credit card and setting up billing the right way — every step.

What You Should Know Before Starting

Do

  • Add a card and move to at least Tier 1 — this raises your rate limit and keeps your data private.
  • Keep your key secret; never share it or show it in screenshots.
  • Set a monthly spend cap — no surprise bills.
  • Enable auto-reload — so the service never stops when the balance runs out.
  • Secure the Google account you created the key in — turn on 2-step verification.

Don't

  • Don't put the key anywhere public (website, GitHub, social media).
  • Don't process heavy/sensitive customer data on the free tier — due to privacy and limits.
  • Don't leave your balance at $0 — when it hits zero, ALL your keys stop at once.
  • Don't reuse a single key across many different systems; it gets messy and risky.
  • Don't forget credits expire after 12 months (unused balance is non-refundable).

Sign in to Google AI Studio

Go to aistudio.google.com with a Google account. We recommend a separate, dedicated Google account for the business (so it doesn't mix with your personal one).

Tip
AI Studio is free; only API usage is charged — and only based on what you use after adding a card.

Create your API key

Open the “API Keys” page from the left menu and click “Create API key” at the top right. Pick a project or create a new one. Your key is generated instantly.

Copy the long key (it starts with e.g. AIza…) and store it somewhere safe.

Your key is like a password
All usage made with this key is billed to your account. Don't share it; if it leaks, delete it in AI Studio and create a new one.

Try it on the Free tier

Your key works even without a card — this is the Free Tier. It's fine for testing and starting at low volume. But it has two important limits:

  • Low rate limit: You'll get “limit exceeded” errors under heavy message traffic.
  • Privacy: On the free tier, the data you send may be used to improve Google's products.
Recommendation
For real customer conversations, add a card in the next step and move to Tier 1. This raises the limit and keeps your data private.

Set up billing (add a credit card)

On the API Keys or Projects page, click the “Set up billing” link next to your project. On the screen that opens:

  1. Select or create a Cloud Billing account.
  2. Enter your country, contact info and credit card details.
  3. Choose the payment model: Prepay for most users.

Once the card is linked, your account automatically moves to Tier 1. This usually takes effect instantly.

What is Prepay?
You load credit in advance (minimum $10, maximum $5,000 per purchase). It's deducted from this balance in near real-time as you use the API. Postpay (pay later) is only available at Tier 3.

Add credit + auto-reload + limit

To keep the service running and your costs under control, set these three together:

  • Starting credit: Add at least $10 (lasts a long time for messaging).
  • Auto-reload: Top up automatically when the balance drops below a threshold — so the service isn't interrupted.
  • Monthly auto-charge limit: Set “charge at most this much per month” to avoid surprise costs.
Very important
If your Prepay balance hits $0, all API keys in all projects of that account stop working at the same time. Be sure to enable auto-reload.

Set a monthly spend cap

On the Spend page in AI Studio you can set a monthly spending cap for your project. It acts as a brake against unexpected high usage. (Requires project owner/editor permission.)

Recommended start
For a single business's WhatsApp/Instagram conversations, a small monthly cap (e.g. a few dollars) is usually more than enough. You can watch usage and raise it.

Monitor your spend

You can track it in two places:

  • AI Studio → Usage / Spend: Daily and monthly usage, cost per model.
  • Cloud Billing console: The official billing record (updates with up to 24 hours of delay).

Add the key to your UPGUN AI panel

Final step: in your business panel, paste your key into the Gemini API Key field under Settings → AI Assistant and save. Your assistant now runs on your own key.

Send a test message and confirm the assistant replies. If there's an issue, check that the key was copied correctly and that billing is enabled.

How Do the Tiers Work?

As you spend and time passes, your account automatically moves up. Higher tier = higher rate limit.

Tier upgrades are automatic
Free → Tier 1 is usually instant. Tier 2 ($100 + 3 days) and Tier 3 ($1,000 + 30 days) upgrade automatically within ~10 minutes once the conditions are met. There's also a 10-minute spend-based limit at each tier (Tier 1: $10/10min, Tier 2-3: $200/10min).

How Much Does It Cost?

You only pay for what you use — per token (a piece of a word). Because UPGUN AI runs on economical models behind the scenes, the cost is very low.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the free tier enough?

Do I have to pay $250/month on Tier 1?
No. $250 is only the maximum spend allowed at that tier — not a fixed fee. You only pay for what you actually use, and most businesses stay at a few dollars a month. You can also set a much lower monthly cap yourself.
Will money be charged as soon as I add a card?
With Prepay, it's deducted from the credit you loaded in advance as you use it. You set the auto-reload and monthly limit; you're fully in control.
How do I reach Tier 2?
Once you've spent $100 total and 3 days have passed since your first successful payment, your account automatically upgrades to Tier 2. You don't need to do anything else.
How does UPGUN AI use my key?
Your key is used only for your own business's assistant, stored securely, and you can change or remove it from the panel at any time.
What happens if my balance runs out?
If the Prepay balance hits $0, all keys in that account stop working. Keep auto-reload on to prevent this.
I'm getting a 'rate limit / limit exceeded' error?
It means you're hitting the rate limit. As you add a card and move up tiers, the limits rise. You can see your current limits on the Rate Limit page in AI Studio.
